What Is SIBO? Common Signs & Symptoms

SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is a digestive imbalance in the small intestine.

In the video above I cover why SIBO is an issue and the top symptoms that make me suspect SIBO in my patients here in Australia.

Some common symptoms I see include bloating, flatulence, burping, abdominal pain and nausea. Many times people suffering from these symptoms don’t think that SIBO could be playing a role. I see this pattern all the time. Many times a SIBO breath test is recommended and often comes back showing bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

If you suspect you have SIBO and are looking for support head over to the bookings page and sign up for a consult.

  1. Hi, I have all the symptoms of hydrogen based SIBO and have just done a Hydrogen and Methane Breath test. I am in a very dark place because the antibiotic called Rifaximin that the lab recommends to fix the situation is not approved by the TGA in Australia and doctors will not give it as they said it is too dangerous to do so. I have diarrhoea every day for 2 months, loosing a lot of weight with blown stomach, trapped gas, belching, burping and gurgling. The lactulose test recreated the worst of my symptoms. Doctors only cared when they thought it was diverticulitis, which a CT scan proved it was not.

    1. So sorry to hear Paul! You may need to try another doctor. I’ve had many many patients that have accessed rifaximin at one point or another in their health journey here in Australia. Herbs can really help here too!
